Let's learn about one of the most important management tools in your toolbox. Management by objectives is about setting specific and measurable goals with your team, a practice which provides focus and alignment. It often involves starting with the strategic priorities at the organizational level and then breaking those goals down into more specific objectives at the team level. We all know what it's like to have a million things come across our desk and to feel scattered at work.

What's beautiful about OKRs when they're done well is that they can help your team to feel a sense of progress and understand how their success ties to the greater success of the business. OKRs, as a practice, are dead simple to start with, but they actually take a lot of time and practice to message. I'm Emily Diaz, and for the last ten years I served as an executive coach and consultant, especially in the OKR space. I've had the opportunity to work with hundreds of companies to help them implement goal setting using the OKR methodology. One of the reasons that OKRs are so impactful is that it really helps to define what our most important priorities are and to do it in a way that is intrinsically motivating. Today we're going to talk about where OKRs come from, a little bit about the history of this practice, and what makes an okay.

What does it stand for? Why does it matter? We're going to also get into the mechanics of how you would write an objective that is impactful and have key results that are measurable. This is where a lot of people will often get tripped up.

We'll discuss pitfalls, especially when you're just starting out. What are some of the mistakes that are most commonly made and how you can avoid them.
