OKRs actually began at Intel back in the 1970s. This specialized Management by Objective method was created by Andy Grove, who was the CEO of the company at the time and a beloved figure. Back then, Intel was facing an existential threat from one of their largest competitors, Motorola. Grove invented OKRs as a way to get everybody focused on their biggest priority, which was to pivot away from memory chips and toward computer processors. John Doerr's book Measure What Matters shares how this practice helped Intel become the giant in the computer processor industry that it is today. Their success is often attributed to the entire company's alignment around one massive goal, which was exactly what OKRs helped them to do. Today, many of the fastest-growing and most successful companies use OKRs to amplify their impact.
