Finally, the majority of your 1-on-1 is spent talking about a combination of goals, growth and feedback. Each of these topics is a home run conversation to ensure you're always connecting about what's meaningful in the other person's world. Ask if there are any wins that are worth celebrating. Any progress that's been made against their goals since you last talked.

Does this person have concerns or challenges things that are standing in their way of making more progress? Talk about their goals and how you can best support and then set their next steps. The other area you can explore together is career growth. Ask if they're clear on their work and how their role relates to the larger business's success.

What is their career vision? Are there any skills or projects that they'd like to be involved in in the next six months to a year? And feedback. Is there a conversation that you might want to have to acknowledge the impact they're having with positive affirmations and recognition?

Or consider if there's any redirection. What many people know as constructive feedback. You could also create space to offer advice or invite a coaching conversation if they're in need of doing some problem-solving. Now, keep in mind that each of these topics does have its own entire course.

We'll learn more about these skills as we go. But for now, this is where you should focus.
