We often view stress as bad, rather than viewing stress in its original meaning, it's become part of the current perception of stress and it's become a synonym for distress. The stress actually helps us survive. It can heighten our senses and improve our performance with a given task or assignment. But is all stress bad for you?
It's not. Stress can actually be a good thing as long as it's not causing a negative effect on you. Hansel, you introduced the concept of stress having two distinct categories distress, and you stress. But distress is what gets most of the spotlight.
It refers to the negative or harmful stress that can result in these feelings of anxiety, frustration or overwhelm. These are events and situations that we perceive as a threat to us as potential job loss, financial problems, or relationship as usual. You stress doesn't get any love, even though it's a very important part of our lives and is responsible for most of our growth that we experience. It's the kind of stress that has a very specific origin and is usually short term.
It leads to action a beneficial form of stress that can help us generate and motivate us is use stress, and it helps us be resilient and achieve our goals. The main difference between distress and you stress is the way that we perceive and respond to them. It's not only our perception, but while distress can be harmful and debilitating, you stress can be a source of growth and achievement. It is really important that we recognize the difference between these two so that we can manage them differently and harness the power of you.
