These career growth conversations can happen at many points throughout the lifecycle of an employee. It doesn't just have to happen during a review time. Whereas a promotion may only happen once a year. Career development conversations should be happening regularly.

The first time you have a career conversation with your teammate should be during their onboarding experience. This is an opportune time to review their current role and make sure that the expectations are clear and starts to get an idea of their desired career growth vision. These career growth conversations should also be happening at least quarterly or whenever you set goals as a team. The goal setting cycle is a great timeline to align to and that you're already naturally talking about goals and now are really honing in on the individual and their progress as well.

Weekly progress should be discussed one on one with your employee. You're not having one on once. Now you can start one on ones or an absolutely crucial opportunity to support the growth and development of your teammates. And finally, you may still have a need to have formal growth in development conversations when you do performance reviews or merit cycle evaluations.

This is happening anywhere between 1 to 4 times a year. And although these conversations are a little bit more formal, none of the information should be a surprise. These are conversations that are building on top of each other happening regularly so that you're preventing the shock factor and you're keeping growth at the top of their mind.
